Sparrowhawk 0, Garden Birds 8
We have been visited by a Sparrowhawk eight times, and to the best of my knowledge he's never managed a kill. He made a ridiculously bad attempt today, flying here, there and everywhere. It was so bad, it was as if it happened in slow motion. I know he'll catch something eventually ... and it'll probably be the only way I'll get a photograph!
Hopefully he'll take the ginger cat which keeps crapping on our lawn ;o)

Our Sparrow Hawk is rather more successful-the mature one and not the lad. But he has been absent for some time. A woodpile for the birds gives them good cover. Worth trying
We do have a log pile but our birds don't tend to use if for cover much (probably not big enough). I don't want to attract the Sparrowhawk, of course. He can come once in a while but I'm always happy when he leaves empty-clawed! He can get his lunch elsewhere and away from my delicate eyes! I'll get a photo one day, I'm sure.
Do you use the guardians that go over the seed feeders and peanut feeders? I have bought some and didn't realise till they arrived that the mesh size means that anything larger than a blue tit has to go in sideways. They haven't really taken to them yet. I want to use the guardians but I don't want to stop the birds feeding at this time of year. H
We have two guardians - one for the fat cake and one for peanuts (to let the blue tits feed in peace. Well, that was the idea, anyway). The peanut one isn't overly popular - but that's probably because we have 'regular' peanut feeders in the garden too - and the blue tits go for those first.
