Day 21: All Gone!

So, the last two chicks spent their final night all alone in the nest box while the other two spent their first night in the wild!

No. 3 & No. 4

Meg arrives to tell them they really do have to leave this time...

Preparation starts. A couple of wing stretches...

"we have to go soon..."

"See that hole up there... that's where we've gotta go..."

A bit more encouragement from Mum and Dad...

Chick 4 doesn't want to watch, so she hides in the corner! Chick 3's tail is just visible as he leaves...

You're going to have to do it, No 4. You can't stay in there forever...

"Up there... okay..."
"Ready!"

"Steady!"

Gone! Ted double checks.

Good luck, chicks!

AW - nice to see them growing up and finally leaving the nest - but sad that we can no longer watch them.

As you say - good luck to them all :D

We'll be doing it all again in about six months, Tricia, with a bit of luck!

Wonderful.
I watched my nest box for the first time this year and can't wait for next year.
Frightening and exciting all at the same time.
What a roller coaster!!!
What happened to the poor nestlings that didn't make it?
Are they still in the nest box?

Yeah, they are, Dani; none of them were removed by us. The fully developed one with feathers disappeared underneath the nest cup. Poor little thing.

Not sure what happened to the two tiny ones. I didn't see them being removed by the parents, but they could have been. If not, I don't suppose they'll be much left of them now.

I would only remove them if there was an obvious problem with flies - luckily there wasn't. But I think I'll empty it all at the weekend - even though I'm not supposed to (it against the law). Nothing else is going to nest in there now so I'll get the feathered one out.

Going to bag and keep the nest for testing purposes of the new camera.
